EuPRAXIA-DN Fellows undertook intra-network secondments

In July 2024, some of the EuPRAXIA-DN Fellows undertook intra-network secondments as part of their MSCA fellowships where they spent time at one of the network partners.  The secondment scheme offers EuPRAXIA-DN Fellows the opportunities to gain exposure to techniques and methodologies developed by their peers across the three scientific work packages.

Andrés Leiva Genre and Mihail Miceski both visited D-BEAM Ltd. in the UK for four weeks. According to Andrés and Mihail, their secondment with D-BEAM was an invaluable and unique experience in both technical and business domains.

Andrés is usually based at University of Pecs in Hungary. His work within EuPRAXIA-DN focuses on THz-driven Dielectric Accelerators (DLAs). He shared that “One of the most important things I learned was the steps needed to convert an advanced scientific tool into an industry application. The conversation with Joseph expanded my views on the fine line between academia and industry. These experiences were shared with another EuPRAXIA-DN Fellow Mihail Miceski, highlighting the collaborative and teamwork principles that are at the core of our project.”

Mihail Miceski is a Fellow based at ELI-ERIC in the Czech Republic. Similar to Andrés, Mihail’s research project also studies potential applications of EuPRAXIA, in particular, the laser-driven undulator coherent radiation source.  Mihail’s secondment involved hands-on training with advanced beam diagnostics technologies, including the installation of a REOLUTE RTLA30-S encoder and big data analysis of beam loss monitor signals from RF breakdowns in the CLARA particle accelerator.  He conducted market research to identify potential clients and explore opportunities in aerospace engineering.  He was also involved in the marketing of D-BEAM by managing the company’s LinkedIn page and creating promotional content. Mihail shared that “This experience significantly enhanced my technical and marketing skills, as well as my understanding of business strategies, preparing me for future challenges in the field.”

Alex Whitehead, another EuPRAXIA-DN Fellow based at ELI-ERIC, also had his secondment with Foton in the Czech Republic. Foton is a company specialized in electronics, optoelectronics, micropositioning automation, and radiation detection. They provide expertise to research institutions, universities, and industrial R&D centers. During his time at Foton, Alex was introduced to CAD product design, and EPLAN Engineering CAD. He took part in testing optical parameters of opto-insulator components for high voltage power supplies. He also designed an optical shutter, which involved Raspberry Pi programming, 3D printing of designed elements, and electrical testing. Within EuPRAXIA-DN, Alex works on the optimization of final laser beam focus for LWFA.
